Configure Incredimail for an IMAP Account

Incredimail is not an email server, but rather, an email client. It is, according to About.com, “A program used to read and send email messages. As opposed to the email server, which transports mail, an email client is what the user interacts with.” 1) What it offers “is a fun and easy to use email client that adds spice to the messages you send.” 2) Having said that, Incredimail does not offer it's own email accounts like AIM, Gmail or Hotmail. What this means is, if you want to use Incredimail and you want to use POPFile, you have to use one or more of these email accounts, too. If not for POPFile, the following instructions would best be served on an Incredimail help file. It is assumed that one already has an email account configured and needs only to know how to add POPFile. However, email accounts are added to Incredimail, just like POPFile. It is for this reason that additional guidelines are included here to the Incredimail 'How To' files.

As of August 19th, 2006, Netscape Mail was upgraded to AIM Mail. Netscape Mail users with AOL Mail accounts using the same Screen Name will be upgraded to AOL Mail. Regardless, your e-mail address and login process will remain the same. Since this change, your can access your Netscape.net account at AIM.com and/or AOL.com. It's a bit confusing if your Netscape username is the same as your AIM and AOL username, but you can only access one IMAP account at a time through Incredimail, so pick one already! ;)

Visit the following pages for preliminary instructions concerning AOL/AIM/Netscape:

Configure an IMAP Account for POPFile

Before you can setup POPFile for an IMAP account, you have to setup your IMAP account for POPFile. By now, you should have an idea what to name your email account's folders. This is an important step for an IMAP setup because POPFile needs these folders to coincide with POPFile's 'Watched' folder and folder drop-down lists for each bucket you've already setup in POPFile. Confused? Ah, we're just getting started! ;) Whether you're using AOL, the new AOL My eAddress, AIM or Netscape, for our purposes, we'll be using AOL in our examples. Sign in to your new account and click on the Mail tab. On the right side, click 'Edit Folders' to set up the folders you need for each bucket in POPFile. Although you need a folder for each bucket, the names of the folders do not have to be the same as the names of your buckets. For example, a bucket named spam could filter messages into a folder named Bulk Folder and a bucket named friends could filter messages into a folder named Friends and so on. It's really up to you.

First things first. Let's get POPFile ready for an IMAP account. See the following page: Getting IMAP.pm up and running.

Configure POPFile for an IMAP Account

Once you've signed up your new account and set up the folders you'll need to use with POPFile, you can now finish setting up POPFile as follows:

(1) On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the IMAP section and make sure that imap_enabled is set to '1'

(2) Let's jump to the Configuration tab and under IMAP fill in the IMAP server hostname, IMAP Server port, IMAP account login and Password for IMAP account and click 'Apply'

(3) Choose a 'Watched Folder' (usually 'Inbox' by default)

(4) Choose a folder for each bucket. You could choose a folder named 'Bulk Folder' for a bucket named 'spam'. You could choose a folder named 'Friends' for a bucket named 'friends'. All mail named 'unclassified' should go automatically to 'Inbox'. Keep in mind that you cannot map more than one bucket to a single folder. That's why it's important to create a folder in your IMAP account for each bucket you've created in POPFile before you configure POPFile to work with your IMAP account.

(5) Click 'Apply'

(6) In the box under 'Update interval in seconds:', enter ‘300’ (without the quotes) and click ‘Apply’. Enter ‘600’ or ‘900’ or more if you don’t need POPFile to check for new messages that often. Refer to the IMAP wiki for more information.

Note: If you are directed to do so, restart POPFile after clicking 'Apply' to the steps above. If you are not directed to do so, there's no need to restart POPFile.

Now we're ready to configure Incredimail! Visit here for the settings you'll be using. Visit the following Incredimail page for preliminary instructions concerning your IMAP account.

Follow the first two steps, then skip step three and jump to the section called 'Manually Configuring the Email Account'. Incredimail won't automatically configure an IMAP account. Follow steps one through five, then return here.

Configure Incredimail for an IMAP Account using POPFile

OK – Next we'll configure Incredimail to work with POPFile using an IMAP account. Follow these steps:

(1) Open Incredimail. Click on 'Tools', scroll down and click on 'Accounts…'

(2) Highlight the IMAP account you configured above and click 'Properties'

(3) On the 'General' tab, you can change the 'Account Name' to your first name, your nickname or any other name as you would like it to appear in your emails.

(4) On the 'Servers' tab, you need to make the following changes. Note the original Incoming Mail Server (under 'Servers Information') and Username (under 'Incoming Mail Server') and write them down.

(5) Change the Incoming Mail Server to:

127.0.0.1

(6) Change the Username to:

imap.aol.com:Username OR imap.aol.com:Username@yourdomainname.com

(7) Check 'Remember password'. The values used in step 6 are the original Incoming Mail Server and Username that you wrote down in step 4 above. Be sure to use the entire Username including the '@AOL.com' if you used it to set up your account in the first place. The 'Username' is usually the name before the '@AOL.com', but with AOL's 'My eAddress', for example, you need to sign in with the entire address, so you use the same here. Notice that a colon ':' is used to separate these two values (this is the default separator used by POPFile; if you have configured POPFile to use a different separator, use that instead).

(8) Next, if you haven't already done so, you need to click 'My server requires authentication' under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' section. Open 'More Settings' and click 'Log on using' with the following:

Username OR Username@yourdomainname.com (same as your Username used to sign in)
password (same as your Password used to sign in and is case-sensitive)

(9) Check 'Remember password' and click 'OK'

(10) On the 'Advanced' tab, you need to change the settings. The 'Server Port Numbers' are:

Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 587 This server does not require a secure connection (SSL)
Incoming Mail (POP3): 143 This server does not require a secure connection (SSL)

(11) Finally, under the ‘Delivery’ section, the ‘Leave a copy of messages on server’ is normally unchecked. If, for any reason, you want to leave copies of your messages on your server, check this box. Then, check the box ‘Remove from server after’ and click ‘up or down’ a short number of days before messages are deleted – a good idea if you don’t visit the original server often!

Regarding an IMAP account, all three boxes in this section should probably remain UNCHECKED. It’s really up to you, though. If your Incredimail crashes, for example, you’d still be able to view your messages here. Again, it’s your choice.

(12) Click 'OK' and then click 'Close' to finish the configuration. Go check your mail!
